He did a lot of great things during his time in that position. He helped increase community outreach and education, fought against obesity and diabetes, and more. Myers has been working in public health for over three decades and is highly respected for his work with minority communities.

As commissioner of health for the City of New York, myers was able to accomplish many great things. He increased public awareness in regards to HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases through community outreach in areas particularly affected by these conditions. Myer helped design programs that targeted certain neighborhoods with large minority populations to help implement education about safe sex practices.

Woodrow Myers is an outspoken advocate for the integration of cultural sensitivity into healthcare. He has worked to improve access to quality healthcare for minorities, especially African Americans and Latinos. After serving in the position of Commissioner of Health for the City of New York, Woodrow Myers joined the faculty at Howard University College of Medicine where he was able to work on issues related to his expertise. Woodrow Myers served as the President and CEO for more than a decade at Howard University Hospital. He was also Chairman Emeritus on Board of Trustees.

Woody Myers Early life and education

Woodrow Myers attended the Yale University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies. He then graduated from Yale Law School and later went on to graduate studies at Columbia University.

Myers was appointed Commissioner of Health by Mayor Bloomberg in 2002, where he led the agency for eight years to improve health care for all New Yorkers. Myers presented an idea to create NYC Care which would provide universal access to primary care services for NYCHA residents, Medicare recipients who are NYCHA residents, NYCHA employed public housing employees and their spouses and unmarried dependent children age 18 years or older.

Woody Myers Politics Career

Woodrow Myers, the first and only black man and first and only cancer survivor to be elected commissioner of health in New York City, was a pioneer in the field of public health.

He was born on April 4th, 1951 in Harlem, NY. Myers earned his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University as well as his medical degree from Downstate Medical School as well as Cornell Medical College. He became Commissioner of Health for the City of New York after Dr. David Sencer left office and became director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases at the CDC (Centers for Disease Control). I think Woody Myers’ contributions to public health will continue to be felt long into the future and we thank him for his hard work!
